Installing Your Window Air Conditioning Unit – Safety, Security, Efficiency

When installing a window air conditioning unit, there are quite a few factors to keep in mind. You have to worry about safety – will the unit fall out and hurt someone? You have to worry about efficiency – does the window that you've chosen maximize the efficiency of the unit? You have to worry about security – can the unit be removed quickly and allow access to a burglar? Here, you'll find a few tips that can help to ensure that the window air conditioning unit is safe, efficient, and secure.

Before You Buy the Air Conditioning Unit

Before you buy the unit, you need to choose where you'll be installing it.

  • Look for a window with a three-prong outlet nearby – you cannot use an extension cord to power air conditioning units safely.
  • Look for an electrical low-load area – if you use devices prone to tripping your breakers, the air conditioning unit shouldn't share the same breaker.
  • Measure the window and know what type of window it is – is it a slider, double-hung, or casement. This will help you find the air conditioning unit that will mount into that particular window.
  • Where's the sun? – Choose a window that isn't facing the west. These are the windows that will take the most sun exposure and cause the unit to work harder for less cool air.
  • Inspect the condition of the window – make sure the window is in good condition.
  • Clean the glass — once the unit has been installed, it'll be a while before you can clean the glass window again.

Install the Air Conditioning Unit

Use the manufacturer's instructions as you work to install the unit. A few tips to add to their instructions include:

  • Drive a couple screws into the top track of sash windows so that they cannot be accidentally opened, allowing the unit to fall to the ground.
  • Screw the unit's side curtains in place. This will keep them from sliding closed on their own.
  • Install some foam board over the side curtains, which are made of thin plastic. The insulation will decrease cool air loss when the unit is being used.
  • Install window sensor alarms. These are small devices that don't require connection to your home security system. If someone was to attempt to remove the window air conditioner to access your home, the alarm will sound and hopefully scare away the burglar.
